SHARK FIGHTS NEWS: James Irvin tests positive for steroids

James Irvin tests positive for steroids

James Irvin has tested positive for steroids and the rematch with Houston Alexander has now been called off

The March 11 bout was set for Shark Fights 14 at the Fair Park Coliseum in Lubbock Texas, has now been called off and Shark Fights have lost their co-headline bout. Irvin came to light after his December 2nd bout loss Jorge Oliveira at Tach Palace Fights 7 when he tested positive for epitrenbolone which is also known as trenbolone metabolite normally used on livestock for muscle growth and appetite. Irvin is no stranger to the roid scene after testing positive after his loss to Anderson Silva. He is now facing a year ban and a fine though all fighters who test positive for steroids will get a chance to appeal against the result. However, Houston would have had to pull out of the Shark Fights 14 fight through a training injury.

Shark Fights 14... Alexander vs Irvin rematch

Houston Alexander will fight James Irvin on March 11th 2011 at Shark Fights 14 in Lubbock Texas. The Light Heavyweight bout will bring back memories of a superman punch at UFC fight Night 13 where Irvin (15-8) knocked out Alexander (11-6) in just 8 seconds.

James Irvin's last fight was considered a no-contest by guest referee Ken Shamrock after Irvin illegally kneeing his opponent in the head and Alexander won his last fight at Shark Fights 13 in September against Ramueau Thierry Sokoudjou.

Shark Fights 14 will not air on pay per view like their last event as they are in current negotiations with a television company.

Connecticut USA moves to sanction MMA

Legislation has now been introduced in the state of Connecticut USA. Matt Lessar recently introduced the proposal and testified before the states legislature's Public Safety Committee. The UFC vice president of government and regulatory affairs Marc Ratner also attended and spoke at a recent hearing at the state capital.

The bill would regulate the sport whilst taxing revenue. According to the proposal, five percent of an events revenue will go to the state. The bill is co-sponsored by state senator Paul Doyle and state rep Mary Mushinsky.

The next part of the process will be a vote by the Public Safety Committee which so far has not been scheduled, however this is expected to happen in the next few weeks.

Both UFC and Bellator have held events in Connecticut, UFC in 2005 and Bellator has run three events over the past two years and are scheduled to hold another on April 2nd 2011

If Connecticut pass MMA sanctioning it would leave New York, Vermount and West Virginia as the final holdouts among states with athletic commisions who do not regulate Mixed Martial Arts though all three states are now considering introducing legislation.
